Sports Management

Most of you have been passionate about some or the other sport at some stage of your life. It's also very likely, that during the childhood, you were fascinated by some player and wanted to become like one. But due to one or the other reason, you could not become a successful sports person. You need not lose heart because there are many other avenues in modern sports which can help you live your passion for the sports as well as earn some money. In addition to becoming a player, you can become a physical education instructor, a coach, an umpire or a referee. Further, you can practice sports medicine or if you write well, you can become a sports journalist. A new career, quite popular in western countries, is sports management which is a mix of sports and marketing or business.

Nowadays, there is so much money in sports that all the successful and well-known players have their own personal agents or managers. Even new entrants have started employing managers to look after their career. As a sports manager or agent, you will be responsible for player's schedules, career progression, business promotion, media and public relations. The administrative aspects like budgeting, finance and other logistics would also be your responsibility. To put it more precisely, sports management combines work as an agent together with the business and marketing aspects of the sport.

The job of a sports administrator involves planning and management of sports activities and events from time to time. There are many private and government- sponsored sports institutions which employ qualified persons to manage their work at various levels. It has been seen that these officials have been sports teachers and coaches. In case of leisure and sports-club management, you are expected to handle administrative work, including that of managing accounts, planning, preparing schedules and timetables and arranging for the specialized coaches as per the requirement. These days, golf clubs, resorts, adventure sports and other leisure activity centers require trained professionals to look after and promote these sporting activities.
